 2022 Preview 


       Madison Academy completed the 2021 season with a 12-2 record. Last year Madison Academy captured the region seven title and a number one seed in the Class 4A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Madison Academy made a nice playoff run in 2021, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Oneonta team by the score of 28-24.

       The Mustangs won as many games as in any season since 2014.

       The defense was very stingy last season as Madison Academy ranked 28th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.9 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Mustangs have gone 22-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Madison Academy has gone a combined 130-30. Their 81.3% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 3A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Madison Academy has managed to compile a record of 199-101. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 3A and 62nd in the AHSAA.




       The Mustangs are led by head coach Bob Godsey who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 27-9 over the past three seasons at Madison Academy. Under his direction the Mustangs have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Godsey.

       Coach Godsey's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-four season stands at 210-75 (73.7%). His 210 wins rank 14th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Godsey's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty times and won eight region championships. Coach Godsey won a state championship at Hartselle in 2011.

       The Madison Academy Mustangs will play in Class 3A region seven during the 2022 season. The Mustangs may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 4A to 3A. They will compete in region seven this year.

       The Mustangs enter the 2022 season riding a 9 game regular season winning streak. Madison Academy has won 7 consecutive region games.

       While most teams rebuild during the off season, Madison Academy has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Mustangs should be considered one of the favorites for the region seven championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Mustangs are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Mustangs have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2008 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

       The Mustangs open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Deshler on Friday, August 19 at Bill Washington Stadium. Last year the Deshler Tigers finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 4A region eight. The Tigers ended last season on a positive note with a win over Colbert County by a score of 41-0 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Madison Academy and Deshler have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 3-1-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2013 with Madison Academy winning by a score of 45-14.
